Even in New York's violent history, it was one of the strangest mysteries ever seen.
The 82-year-old socialite and heiress Irene Silverman vanished from her Upper East Side mansion.
A fifty-strong team of FBI and NYPD officers scoured the city's streets, trying to find an old woman who had vanished without trace.
No one knew if she was dead or alive.
One of the city's richest women had completely disappeared - and the police quickly hit a dead end.
But then another elderly woman, Sante Kimes, and her son Kenny, were arrested on minor fraud charges.
Could they be linked to the disappearance of Irene Silverman?
One eagle-eyed NYPD officer believed they might be.
As the police investigated the pair, a horrifying picture emerged the mother and son were linked to a brutal series of thefts, fraud, kidnappings and multiple murders throughout the country, for which they had so far escaped arrest.
And in New York they were attempting the most audacious crime of their brutal career.
In 'Manhattan Murder Mystery' the true crime writer Alix Kirsta describes Irene Silverman's last chilling days and hours, and the horrifying plot that eventually saw the Kimeses charged with murder.
It culminated in what has been called Manhattan's "trial of the century".
But even today, the mystery persists.
Irene Silverman's body has never been found, and her last moments and the cause of death remain unknown.
'Manhattan Murder Mystery' is an enthralling true life crime story. Meticulously researched and brilliantly told it is as gripping as any thriller - and twice as chilling because every word is true.

In the summer of 1998, 82-year-old Irene Silverman disappeared from her $10 million mansion near Central Park in New York City. Although a wealthy heiress, the shrewd, eccentric old lady rented out studio apartments in her huge home to those who could pay exorbitant sums for a classy temporary address. "Manny Guerrin" (a tenant about whom she had expressed concerns to her friends) disappeared at the same time. Only one of them was ever seen again.I was familiar with the basic story, having read SON OF A GRIFTER - Kent Walker's fascinating book about his mother and brother (Sante and Ken Kimes) who were convicted of the murder. This short book gives a fuller picture of one of their victims and explains why her death rocked the Upper East Side. It also answers the question of how the Kimes managed to rent from a woman who was known to be selective about her tenants. It was simple. They furnished no proof of identity or references, but offered to pay the $6,000/month rent in advance and in CASH. Was $6,000 "under-the-table" (and un-taxable) enough to tempt Silverman to break her own security rules? If so, she paid the ultimate price for her lapse of judgement.

A nice short read about real events. Events in the story reminded me of parts of various story lines from the TV series "Law & Order".
interesting true crime, detailed and well researched if you

price is right.
Was an intriguing read. Kept my interest from beginning to end. Definitely recommend to mystery readers. Was not dull or boring.
No I didn't enjoy this book. The story was one I've heard of before but didn't feel that it was written in a way to hold your interest.
I would not recommend you buying this book at sll.
I am a true crime fan. The read was a little short but it was to the point and informative.Could do with a little editing but the errors did not distract too much from the story. I would recommend this read for those who like true crime stories.Manhattan Murder Mystery
I saw on , and I thought it sounded interesting so I got it. But I have to say that in the first paragraph, I almost deleted it from my kindle because of a blatant error (June 4 = independence day). But I took a deep breath and kept on. I was glad I did. though the book, could have used another proofread before publishing, it was a very gripping account of the disappearance/murder of Irene Silverman. This was a case I knew nothing about and I was fascianted by how utterly without conscious the culprits were. Very engrossing.
